The Standard Highline NYC

EatStay

A modern hotel with a delicious perspective.

On my recent trip to NYC I stayed at The Standard Highline. I have become a creature of habit in New York and I’ve been staying in the same hotel. So it was fun and exciting to know that was going to have a new experience. I loved The Standard, the location is fabulous – walking distance to the Hudson, the best parts of Meatpacking (including Bleeker) and the hotel restaurant (The Standard Grill) is delicious.

The views from the rooms are amazing, the best are half way up (not too close to the top and the party scene – unless you’re taking part!) and high enough to get a view across the top of the surrounding buildings and uptown. We were on the 11th floor which was perfect.

The rooms are minimalist modern and the staff are helpful and friendly. Bathrooms are small but well formed, I had a bath/shower with a glass side that opened onto the bed which was fun and unusual. It also meant the light in the bathroom was excellent for makeup application!  Most importantly the floor to ceiling windows are amazing. The Hotel lobby and communal areas are modern and bold, making them feel very New York and fun as you walk around.

A huge thank you to Mr and Mrs Smith for arranging my stay!

The Standard Grill

The Grill is under the hotel, with a street terrace and a light and airy room inside. The food is fantastic. I ate breakfast here everyday and it was delicious. They had some of the best croissants I’ve ever had. Lunch and Dinner services are busy so book ahead.

It's all about the view

The views, day and night from the rooms at the standard were the main attraction to me. I was transfixed by them. The changing colours of the cityscape were amazing. Every corridor and room has the most amazing view. Not to mention the roof top bar and terraces. One side of the Hotel looks over the water, the other back across the city.

Chunky Knit

Walking around the meatpacking district wrapped up in the best chunky knit. I love NYC winters, they are so crisp but the skies are nearly always blue, I wish London was the same, but all to often they are a treat.

Matcha and Rose Cake

BakingSweet

I recently made this cake for a friends birthday. It’s a really unusual flavour combination and looks beautiful. I love Matcha and green tea cakes, this frosting would also work really well on chocolate cake.

1

For the Cakes

  1. Preheat the Oven to 180°C.
  2. First make your crystallised rose petals. Follow my full method here, but the basics are brush the Petals with Egg and then sprinkle them with Sugar and leave them on a wrack to dry.
  3. The make the cakes… Cream the Butter and Sugar together until pale and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the Eggs, and then sift the Flour and fold it into the mix.
  5. Pour the mix into 12 cupcake (or 6 and a 15cm Cake Tin) cases and bake for 10-15mins or until golden and springy.
2

For the Topping

  1. Beat the Milk, Butter, Vanilla and half the Icing Sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  2. Then add the rest of the Icing Sugar and Matcha and beat again until smooth and well blended. (If it’s too stiff mix in a tsp of milk at a time to get the right consistency).
  3. Using a palette knife, spread the top of the cupcakes with the frosting and and top with the crystallised rose petals.

Extra Top Tip

For even more deliciousness, scoop out the cakes and fill the well with raspberry jam which has been mixed with a tsp of Rose Water and then frost!
