Chelsea Flower Show 2016

Gardens

For me the beginning of summer is always marked with Chelsea Flower Show. This year was the best for several years, in my opinion. As you will see below both the garden design and trade stands were stunning.

There are always certain trade stands that I look forward to seeing at Chelsea. The first is absolutely the cacti stand. The long stand is always in full bloom, and the plants end up looking like sea creatures, more akin to coral and anemones than desert plants.

Secondly I love the Bonsai trees, these minture scale landspaces are so beautiful in their tiny perfection and yet so wonderfully minimal. I loved this maple, whose leaves were the most beautiful pale pink and apricot colour.

The tiny flowers in the trade stand in the first pictures made me feel like I had entered a magical landscape, they were so beautiful and miniature, like a set designed by Ang lee. I love their little floating faces in the pool. I have floated hellebores as centre pieces before, they look so lovely.

Finally I always visit my favourite flowers, the Peony, Rose and Orchid stands. All equally amazing in their own way.  I always leave with a feeling of wonder for the variety and a desire for everything!

The garden design this year was really strong, most particularly the Husqvarna Garden designed by Charlie Albone was utterly lovely. I was lucky enough to visit on Monday with the RHS judges and press, so I didn’t have to struggle to the front of a crowd to get these photos, which also meant I had time to really appreciate the garden. I loved the tiered box and the gravel surrounded paving. Subtle water on the stairs and the mix of structure from the box and pleached trees in combination with the soft movement of the tall foxgloves and peonies was really emotive. I love when designers create gardens for Chelsea that you can imagine living in. This was one of those gardens, ready made for a drinks party or reading the papers on sunday.

The Alitex greenhouses are also always beautifully styled and make one lustfully wish not only for one but a beautiful house in the country for it to live at. This year they had done lovely displays with succulents, which I am always a sucker for (forgive the pun).

Outdoor seating had a strong emphasis this year, which was lovely to see. I think as an enjoyer (rather than creator) of gardens I loved seeing the ways you can live in your garden more, making the most of it in the summer months ahead.

On LocationOutfits

I’ve always loved this image, so on my last trip to Paris I wanted to recreate my version of it. Here are the results. I hope you think they are fun! The skirt and top are two of my favourite pieces, both are at least 8 years old but still going strong. Classics are always worth the investment.

Those Rare ‘me’ days

When I was at school, my mother would take me to Bicester Village on the way home for the weekend. It was the ultimate treat and I still think of a visit to the Village a total indulgence. A truly ‘me’ day. I love to drive there and have an empty car to fill with goodies.

Upon Arrival

Arriving at the Village, parking is made so easy.  You can park yourself for free all day, or you can use the valet service. I have done both and depending on the situation (when Christmas shopping I use the valet to reduce the stress of the season!). The village is laid out along a long street, as you can see from the map above, it’s also totally pedestrianised. With a mix of fashion, food and lifestyle locations you will be entertained all day. I normally want to get straight into shopping because I’m so excited but if you have time it’s so nice to grab a bite to eat first.

farmshop restaurant & cafe

Eating at Bicester has just got even chicer. If you’re a fan of the Soho House & Co group, you will love this new addition.

The farmshop restaurant & cafe  is the newest food additional to the village. Offering classic modern english food with a great emphasis on the urban health trend. The interior is all exposed wood panels and casual bare tables. The mock and cocktails are delicious and their brunch menu is to die for. Bicester is such a popular destination, I would recommend arriving at 10/10.30am heading straight to the farmshop for brunch and then enjoying the full length of the village (the farmshop is the bottom end so allows you to start shopping at the beginning of the street).

I loved the sandwiches! They came with delicious crispy chips, I also had the iced tea which was so pretty and pink and tasted just as good as it looked.

When you hit the shops

The shops are Bicester are getting better and better every year (and they have even more expansion coming soon). The share is now so broad and of such a high quality it becomes difficult to imagine how one could want to shop anywhere else. I have a hit list of shops I always visit. I have loaded up a full travel rolodex of these shops and why I love them (i.e. what you can find in the shops that you might not know to ask about!), so do check in for that. Some of my favourites include Celine, N.Peal, Valentino, Givenchy and Balenciaga.
