Winter Evenings

For New Year’s Eve evening wear seems to be mandatory, if only to add a sense of occasion to the proceedings. Having said that, one doesn’t want to feel uncomfortable and over dressed. I think the perfect solution to this is a floor length skirt and a top, rather than a dress. I love Cashmere and Silk combined for a winter evening look. It’s so luxurious and adds an effortless atmosphere.

The shell collection in the cupboard above is my Mother’s. It has been collected over more than three decades. Every time we visit a beach we find something to add to it by beach combing. The jars of sand are from special memorable locations and other larger pieces were antiques bought over many years. The collection is a passion of mine. I love to go and look at it and enjoy not only the beauty of nature but the memories that go along with each shell. Some of the most amazing things were found at the Áman resort in the Philippines – Amanpulo.  The beach is stunning and I experienced the best snorkelling of my life there.

Collections are a great way to collect memories and create a really personal home. Dried flowers, antique china, your children’s artwork, bird’s nests and other treasures make for wonderful interest points in a room.  The key is to make a it a statement, don’t have one or two, have at least twenty! On english beaches I look for fossils, beautiful sea glass and special pebbles. Drift wood can also be a great addition to an outdoor shower, bathroom or your garden.
