Denim on denim is something that has been popular for decades, but in its most recent incarnation the emphasis is most definitely on  shades and textures.  In order to move away from the 90s boy band look, I recommend that you stay with a traditional washed out denim like I'm wearing here.  Don't go with anything with too many effects, bleach patterns or details. Keep it simple, and keep the denims within a tone, but not matching.
