Walking around NYC is one of my favourite things to do when I visit (obviously in the right foot wear).  You always stumble across new places to eat and stores to window shop. I think the best places to eat in New York are often the unsung heroes of your local area, small unbranded places where the food is authentically american and delish, but I will come to some of them in my travel guides soon.
